How to make flowers last longer

In addition to using any flower food provided, there are many steps you can take to ensure you enjoy your blooms for a long time.

First, look for bouquets that contain flowers still in bud, as this means they will arrive earlier in their life cycle and you can enjoy the opening of the petals.

When your flowers arrive, cut the stems back a few inches, cutting them diagonally – this helps the flowers absorb as much water as possible. Also refresh the water every few days and again trim the stems 1cm when you do this.

Before putting the flowers in your vase, remove any leaves that will be below the waterline. If left, they can mold and discolor the water.

Check the care instructions that come with it, as they may contain advice specific to your flowers. For example, roses are often sent with guard petals intact – these outer petals aren’t as showy as the inner petals but protect the flowers in transit and can be gently removed to make your bouquet look its best.

Finally, put them away from direct light and radiators to prevent them from drying out prematurely.

How we test online flower delivery services

We’ve only tested flower delivery services with nationwide delivery options, sending over 100 bouquets to a panel of readers across the UK, from 20 different brands. The jury rigorously judged each brand on the quality of its delivery service, as well as the appearance and freshness of the flowers from arrival to expiry. They then shared their experience with us via a detailed questionnaire.

At GHI, we also ordered a bouquet from each of the 20 services to assess their websites and ordering processes. The best ones were intuitive to navigate with strong images and clear product descriptions. Our experts have reviewed the range of payment options and rated the selection of delivery options. We also timed how long the bouquets stayed fresh.

    Delivery service

To make our list, the bouquets had to arrive safely, in good condition, and on time. Our panel noted where flowers were left if not on delivery and shared their verdict on how well the packaging protected their flowers.

Our testers also rated each bouquet’s “wow factor” upon arrival. Obviously this is subjective, but the overall effect – flowers and arrangement – had to be approved. They brought back extra touches like ribbons and care instructions. Additionally, they judged how well the bouquet lived up to its marketing photos.

We also voluntarily made a spelling mistake in our gift cards, to see if they would be corrected by the service. Most have not been modified, so reread your message before finalizing your purchase!

Whether you’re looking to go all out for a luxury bouquet or are looking for something impactful yet affordable, we’ve found the best online flower delivery services to suit you.
